New Study on Youth Suicide-Urban vs Rural

posted on
JAMA Pediatrics released yesterday an article about youth suicides, comparing urban and rural settings. While Boise isn't considered rural, much of Idaho is. The study found that suicide rates for both males and females were almost double in rural settings, and that the rates of suicide by firearms were disproportionately higher in rural areas. If you know someone who is coping  with symptoms of depression, consider having a discussion about how you can reduce risk--keepi...

Helping family members understand depression

posted on
Talking with people about your depression symptoms can be very difficult, especially if those people haven't ever had symptoms of their own. A young woman, Allie Brosh, started writing about her experience on her blog, Hyperbole and a Half. She actually started her blog way back in 2009. But, in October 2011 she started talking about depression, and then did a second entry in May 2013. She is a tremendous artist and you can listen to a great interview with her h...

Declining Mood in the Fall/Winter Months?

posted on
In just a couple weeks, (November 2nd), we will turn our clocks back an hour. And, the days do seem shorter--it's dark when I wake up and it's dark long before I go to bed. Many of us struggle to adjust to the change for a few weeks, but weather it. For others, seasonally worsening mood is an aspect of dealing with a major mood disorder. People often complain of sleeping too much, gaining weight, and feeling perpetually fatigued, along with feeling more depressed.  Seasonal aff...

Suicide Prevention

posted on
With the untimely death of Robin Williams, there have been many articles and programs written about suicide of late. They're hard for me to take in. When I was just starting out in mental health in 1990, I went to hear a psychiatrist speak about new brain research on schizophrenia. While perhaps the good doctor was speaking in hyperbole, he said, "The 90s is the decade of the brain! There is every reason to believe we will have a cure for schizophrenia by the year 2000". At th...

Suicide Prevention Website

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has a great website with lots of useful information. The name of the site is You Matter. There are sections for getting help for yourself or for a friend,  and for recognizing warning signs for suicide. Another section on the site is a blog that is divided into three focus topics--One is Self Love, which is all about good self care and has articles such as 'getting through the next 5 minutes'. The next focus topic is What to Ex...

USA Today published an article yesterday titled The Cost of Not Caring. The article is divided into 4 sections. These are:   A separate and unequal system--people with mental illness face legal discrimination Lost in darkness--many wait nearly a decade for treatment Working for change--advocates chip away at discriminatory policies Overcoming the shame--speaking up heals old woundsThe article states: Although most people with mental illness are not violent, the USA's dysf...

Walking Meditation

posted on
It is that glorious time of year in June where there weather is just perfect. The sun is shining and it's not too hot.  Often, therapists ask our clients to get outside and get some fresh air and exercise. In January that can be a daunting task, but right now is great time to get outside.  If you're not ready for vigorous exercise, consider doing a walking meditation. Walking meditation is an opportunity to be mindful, present and moving at the same time, rather than ...

Research on Facebook

Love Facebook? Hate it? This is a great little article on how Facebook has changed social life in the past decade, and shares 10 social research studies about how Facebook affects us.  One of the things I liked about this article at Greater Good is how much CBT really relates. For example, one study was about the "likes" one gets.  The article states, "When you post a status update, how disappointed are you if no one 'likes' it or comments on it? O...
