How Are You At Being Mindful?

At MidValley Healthcare, one of the problems we work on is coping with symptoms of anxiety. We spend considerable time on using CBT skills to combat distorted thoughts that lead to anxiety, but another skill that is helpful in reducing anxiety is being mindful.

Mindfulness is about being fully present, aware of the current state, calmly accepting or at least acknowledging one's thoughts, feelings, sensations, etc. Obviously, this takes lots and lots of practice. In being mindful while anxious, one accepts that the anxiety is present. In our Coping group, we work on this skill.

Here is a link to a mindfulness quiz. You'll note that the questions that will get you a higher score sometimes require behavior that is opposite to what CBT teaches. What is important is for you to know which skills help you manage your anxiety more effectively. Some of us do better with CBT, while others find mindfulness more helpful.

Consider participating in one of our step down groups if mindfulness is something you would like to learn about to help manage symptoms of anxiety.
