Migraine is Linked to Depression and Anxiety--Can Mindfulness Reduce Pain?

Posted on 03/31/2014 10:50:00 AM

Migraines can be debilitating and there doesn't seem to be any one clear explanation for them. However, there does seem to be a relationship (or link) between depression and migraines.

I've linked to two articles which address the relationship, and then there is a third link about managing pain with mindfulness.

The first link is to an article which reviews a study from Toronto, Canada about migraines and depression.  The second link is about the relationship of anxiety and depression to migraine, making the point that the relationship is bidirectional, meaning that the link goes both ways.

The third link is to a new study out of University of Utah and their model is under further review but it looks promising.

A skill we work on is mindfulness for managing overwhelming emotions, but clearly it is being used for managing cravings and pain. On our Resources page you will find several links for meditation and pain management. I hope you find these helpful.
