Options for managing problem drinking

Persons coping with mental health issues such as depression, bipolar, and anxiety sometimes use alcohol as a way of coping with symptoms. This obviously can cause problems but it may not always lead to addiction. 

Even still, a person might recognize that the use of alcohol is becoming problematic, but not see herself as "an alcoholic", and may not meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence. This person might not want to attend AA for a variety of reasons.

Controlled drinking, drinking in moderation, drinking mindfully and healthfully are goals for many people who simply don't want to give up alcohol altogether.

     While people are in treatment at MidValley, our expectation is abstinence. You can read about reasons for that here regarding medication and alcohol. Also, taking 30 days away from all alcohol use lowers one's tolerance which is a healthy thing.
